With refugee students present in schools across San Diego County, support for educators working with refugee and newcomer students is a structural necessity. Here, we feature short video interviews with teachers at the Teaching and Learning Collaborative (TLC), with an aim to document and share teaching experiences and practices that can support other educators in similar contexts. TLC educators were interviewed given their sustained, direct experience working with refugee students and expertise in developing effective instructional practices. We hope this serves as a resource for educators seeking concrete, classroom-based pedagogies that move beyond deficit approaches and towards more responsive teaching for refugee students.

Caren Holtzman is the executive director of the TLC, retired faculty member in UC San Diego's Department of Education, and former classroom teacher in San Diego.

Eddie Gallagher is a teaching artist and educator in the Summer Level Up Program within TLC.

Kathrina Mendez is a faculty member in the Teacher Education Program at UC San Diego, and formerly a general education teacher and language arts specialist. She is also an educator with the TLC.

Nubia Nunez is a sixth-grade teacher and educator with the TLC.
